I remember when the "Raft Race" as we called it back then was a big event every year. Hundreds would build a homemade raft take on the mighty Savannah.....safe to say a few were drunk..just maybe. I remember when I entered the then famous race with a group of industrious young men who would eventually be my in laws. We won third place in raft design or creativity or something and when we hit the rapids it broke into a million pieces and I finished the race on a inter tube. Great fun. Some of us former participates joked when we saw a safety boat, we thought back to the old days when you were on your on, old school, those were the days. The race hasn't been run in a long time but this year a group called river keepers organized the race and called Paddlefest. There there were only 4 or 5 homemade rafts, most opting for canoes or kayaks, but maybe in the years to come it will grow bigger and better and maybe I'll build one and show the kids what it's all about.
